LITTLE DAMAGE TO TUVALU AFTER ABNORMALLY HIGH SPRING TIDES
FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (February 22, 2000 – Radio Australia)---Reports from
Tuvalu say there was little flooding over the weekend from abnormally high
spring tides, despite earlier predictions of widespread damage.
The weather bureau predicted last week that the weekend tides would flood the country’s only international airport, the telecom building, the electricity building and most low-lying areas of the main island of Funafuti.
However, the Director of Meteorological Services, Hillia VaVae, said today that there had been little of the expected severe damage, with only the ground water table affected by salt seawater.
A report yesterday said phone services had been cut because of the flooding and were not expected to return to normal until the end of the month.
