TUVALU GENERAL ELECTIONS AT THE END OF THE MONTH

FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (July 5, 2002 – Radio Australia)---About 5,000 voters are expected to cast their votes during Tuvalu's general elections at the end of this month.

Mr. Semiti Lopati, the Supervisor of Elections, said the figure will be made final shortly.

With the registered number of voters around the 5,000 mark in past elections, and with voter turnout in previous elections about 80 percent, Mr. Lopati said he expects this year's election figures to be no different.

The local government has allocated $25,000 for the general election, to be held on July 25th, to cover election preparation work and the salaries of election officials.

A total of the 39 candidates are contesting Parliament’s 15 seats.

There are two women candidates.
