Tuvalu Prepares for July 25 National Election
FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (July 11, 2002 – Radio Australia)---Election officials in
Tuvalu say preparations are well under way for a general election to be
held on July 25th.
There are 39 candidates competing for 15 parliamentary seats across eight
Election supervisor Semiti Lopati says there has been an increase in the
number of candidates, compared to previous elections.
"Well, I think there seems to be more interest in talking politics and
that's why there's an increase in numbers.
"We don't have any party system here so it seems each individual is
running on their own.
"Our concern is the problem of communication. We will be dealing with the
outer islands and will have spending on forms and faxes," Mr. Lopati said.
