Tuvalu Prepares for July 25 National Election

FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (July 11, 2002 Radio Australia)---Election officials in Tuvalu say preparations are well under way for a general election to be held on July 25th.

There are 39 candidates competing for 15 parliamentary seats across eight islands.

Election supervisor Semiti Lopati says there has been an increase in the number of candidates, compared to previous elections.

"Well, I think there seems to be more interest in talking politics and that's why there's an increase in numbers.

"We don't have any party system here so it seems each individual is running on their own.

"Our concern is the problem of communication. We will be dealing with the outer islands and will have spending on forms and faxes," Mr. Lopati said.
