Political Situation in Tuvalu Remains Unclear

13/08/2003 17:00:48 | ABC Radio Australia News

The political situation in Tuvalu is unclear, after a court authorised a sitting of parliament, sought by the Opposition.

The court sat last week to rule on Prime Minister Safatu Sapoanga's refusal to recall parliament, after losing majority support.

The court said it was contrary to the spirit of the constitution for a Prime Minister to try to remain in power by delaying the recall of parliament.

Mr Sapoanga has left Tuvalu for the Pacific Island Forum leaders meeting in Auckland and has not made a decision on a sitting.

However the court has confirmed the Governor General has the power to recall parliament.
