The Tuvalu community on 12 November 05, held a farewell gathering for Tuvalu students who have successfully completed their studies in 2005

The highlight of this farewell gathering was the award of certificates of academic achievement to those students who excelled in their respective academic area of studies. The award covered all tertiary institutions in Fiji:- USP, FSM, FIT, FSN and NZPTC. The award was based on criteria agreed upon by the Tuvalu Mentoring Committee, which focus specifically on excellent academic performance - i.e., those students who achieved a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3 or equivalent in semester one of 2005. The awards were categorized to: Foundation studies, Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Science, Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters Program (including MBA).

The following Tuvalu students were awarded certificates of academic excellence as the best performers of 2005:

Foundation studies: Ms Seiteu Tipu
Certificates - none qualified
Diplomas: Iosefa Manulele of FIT
Bachelor of Education: Ms Betty Vave
Bachelor of Arts: Mr. Kilifi O'Brien
Bachelor of Science: none qualified
Postgraduate Certificates/Diplomas - none qualified
Master of Arts - Mr. Temate Melitiana

The above awards were co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Government of Tuvalu and the Tuvalu Mentoring Committee in Suva.

In recognizing the hard work done by these students, especially the graduating students, the Tuvalu Mentoring Committee has also recommended for a very special award of a gold medal to the most excellent academic achiever and all rounder Tuvalu graduating student in any given year. This is purely based on those students who have graduated and achieved an Cumulative Point Average (CGPA) of minimum 3.5 or its equivalent. It is anticipated that this gold medal is awarded during a special function in Funafuti, preferably during USP graduation ceremony, or in a Pre-Departure? function hosts by the Government of Tuvalu for all Tuvalu students (new students, continuing students and those who have graduated).
