Tuvalu Earns Silver at South Pacific Games

August 29, 2007

Apia, Samoa

Logona Esau has claimed the silver medal in the men's 68kg Clean and Jerk weightlifting division.

The award is the first Pacific-wide medal for Tuvalu at an international event. Logona also won Tuvalu's first ever international medal in Palau at the South Pacific mini-games in 2005.

At the Faleata Sporting complex, Logona, in the 69kg weight division, lifted a clean 141kg, putting him in second place. Joe Vueti of Fiji won the gold with a lift of 150kg.

Though it was only the Fijian national anthem heard at the medal ceremony, Logona Esau up there was enough to make every Tuvaluan in the complex emotional and very proud of his performance.

Logona was also Tuvalu's flag-bearer at the 2007 South Pacific Games.
