New Air Service To Boost Rotuma, Tuvalu Economies
August 23, 2008
New direct flights between the Fiji island of Rotuma and Tuvalu will boost both island groups, the Fiji Times reports.
The new Air Pacific flights will give Rotuman farmers another market for their crops, and increase the amount of fresh produce available on Tuvalu. Taukelina Finikaso, Tuvalu’s Minister for Communication, Transport and Tourism, said they were particularly keen on importing taro, cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, dalo-ni-tana, rourou, among other crops.
Last month, Fiji’s interim government gave the go-ahead for all relevant ministries and agencies to continue to assist the Rotuma Island Council in the implementation of trade arrangements with Tuvalu and the establishment of the required infrastructure and management capabilities, the Fiji Times said.
The Secretariat of the Pacific Community has also been involved in developing the expanded trade ties between Fiji and Tuvalu.
